Gears Tactics Review: XCOM Meets Gears of War
When tackling an objective, buddies can automatically mark the enemies for you. Though there is no radar, marked targets stay marked and show through walls. This makes it so you need to be much more aware of your surroundings, a concept many have tackled in Ground Zeroes. Snake is more mobile than before, and coupled with the open world and open-ended nature of the missions, it will overall be a more versatile Metal Gear game. The controls are still of the Metal Gear nature though, so some may need to unlearn some common 3rd person game control schemes and get used to some quick menu hopping to get things done in real time. When getting up to an enemy, there is a wide range of options like in previous games. Interrogating and knocking them out seems to be the ideal method of dealing with an unaware soldier, since if the coast is clear you can use the Fulton Recovery (a balloon that shoots them into the sky) to almost immediately extract them and add them to your ranks. Speaking of, the Fulton can be used for enemy armaments and even their vehicles. Likewise, armaments can get dropped in for you if you need a change in loadout or vehicle.
Since the levels are made to seem more organic and realistic, the stealth opportunities will be more different than before. Mainly, there are open areas, so sneaking up effectively will be about getting to know your terrain and keeping a distance. Fortunately, the presence of buddies serves to make you aware of enemies more easily. On the bright side, an open area also means that running away or repositioning when you are spotted is much easier. On the other hand, an enemy’s pursuit is harder to lose when there are less corridors and walls between you and them. Being spotted will likely be noticeably harder than before, at least starting out. For those who get caught often, the feature from Ground Zeroes where time slows down and you are able to fire a few quick rounds upon being noticed is back. Players will likely get more and more accustomed to the maps available, as well as how to take full advantage of Snake’s increased range of movement and aiming. There does not seem to be a penalty to using buddies, or really any reason not to since you can tell them to hold position somewhere or come to you. Even if they get taken out, buddies are automatically extracted, so for the first time, Snake may not be consistently alone on the missions.
Rare currently has a number of projects in development at the moment, with the first being a Sea of Thieves port to the Xbox Series X. Like Gears 5 , the open sea pirate adventure is going to be optimized for the new console this holiday season, though Microsoft isn’t giving any details as to what that actual means. Metal Gear Solid V plans to be many things: open-world, customizable, flexible, dark, funny, epic, heartfelt, cinematic… and it plainly seems to accommodate all those things together into a freeing stealth experience. For starters, as an open-world SLG game News, Metal Gear Solid V will not be that large, nor will it have a giant continuous area. Instead, the game treats you to patches of land in different countries where a large range of missions and operations will take place and can be initiated.
Another studio largely absent from the July 23 festivities, Mojang recently launched its dungeon crawler inspired title Minecraft Dungeons . The studio is continuing to put out new updates and expansions for the game, like the recent Jungle Awakens expansion . Ray Tracing is another major next gen feature, one that Mojang has shown off in Minecraft , so it’s highly likely that the studio is hard at work getting that ready for the eventual launch of the Xbox Serie
It’s a fun adaption of mostly old and a little new into something any tactics player will enjoy as much as the uninitiated fan who just want more Gears of War after the most recent entry’s controversies . That former group of masochists will surely be looking for punishment, and Gears Tactics has them covered. There are four difficulties, with the Insane option being just as delightfully painful as in the main series. However, XCOM popularized the Ironman mode for the squad tactics genre, (wherein squad perma-death is enabled, missions can’t be restarted, and saves auto-wipe after a Gear bites the dust), and fans of meaningful fail states will be glad to know that Ironman is present here and can be used to modify playthroughs of any difficulty, rather than cruelly reserving it exclusively for Ins
A lot is borrowed in Gears Tactics , but that’s not a bad thing by any stretch of the mind. Five classes, Support, Vanguard, Heavy, Scout, Sniper, provide a wealth of tactical options and synergy opportunities against a sometimes insurmountable foe, and it feels like XCOM with a few gritty Gears of War twists. Cover is the basis of the mainline series, and that’s equally true in this ambitious spinoff , with some added destructibility of certain weaker objects like boxes and sandbags. It may offer few innovations, but those that it does are thanks to is unique source material.
