What are Digital Skills?
What are Digital Skills?
Digital skills are defined as a range of abilities to use digital devices, communication applications, and networks to access and manage information such as social media, search engine optimisation, analytics, email, mobile, video, content marketing and pay per click marketing and many more. They enable people to create and share digital content, communicate and collaborate, and solve problems for effective and creative self-fulfilment in life, learning, work, and social activities as a whole.
In today’s workplace Digital Skills is not the future. It is the right here and now and these are vital skills as it expands into all areas of our lives. It not just those who work in IT but stretches to marketing, customer services and retail, business, engineering, health and social care, in fact in just about any sector in the employment industry.
When I was Cabin Crew back in the 80’s such a skill wasn’t needed. I bought my first computer in 1999 of which I learnt the basics for email etc and when I started my business in 2009 even then it was only a case of learning a few skills to run my business with a simple mobile phone. However, as the years rolled on, I could see that wasn’t quite going to cut it. I could see I was falling behind as the Digital era took off and oh boy, was I lost. I realised my old style of marketing along with my simple website and phone needed a huge revamp and I really didn’t know where to start.
There is a genuine fear of a digital skills gap created by the boom of the digital economy versus the amount of people who are trained to work in it. I was one of those who had genuine fear. The UK needs 750,00 more people with digital skills to capitalise on jobs that could boost the UK economy by billions, and I was making sure I was one of them in the know in order for my business to survive. It was the ONLY way my business could survive.
However, digital skills should not be something to be afraid of. It is an opportunity to jump into new sectors or get a better job than your present one regardless of age. Or it may be that due to the coronavirus outbreak there is a huge need for many to upskill in this area. Being a person with digital skills, in the current economic climate is in big demand and can be a very lucrative skill to have and will get you standing out in the crowd! If you already own a small business it is imperative that you have these skills to move with the times and stay in the market.
